About Us
Kanoya, in Southern Japan, is an enchanting land of wind-kissed bluffs and endless verdant tea fields. An eminent and historical domain of the pre-Meiji era, it encapsulates the Japanese countryside and is a home to many traditional artisans. And it is the origin of my youth.
Having grown up in Kanoya I yearned for the city and moved to Tokyo to attend Aoyama Gakuin for university. When I was just starting out in the city, I bought a handmade coffee cup in a small back alley shop in Daikanyama. The coffee I drank from that cup every morning was special - it added an extra bit of needed color to my day.
Even an ordinary dish when served to loved ones on an important vessel becomes a special intimate experience.
While living abroad in Singapore and now in San Francisco, I am once again reminded of the wonders of Japanese culture, technology, and taste. I wish for the people of the world to know about the delicacy and beauty of Japanese tableware made using refined craftsmanship and care. With that thought in mind, I launched Kanoya Living.
In this age where technology continues to advance and so much of our lives are virtual, physical art made by human hands anchors us to the present. Please take a moment to pick up such a vessel that allows you to feel the warmth and heart.
These are the things that adorn my own home and is in this spirit that I invite you to explore Kanoya Living with us. Everything I present here is handmade by artisans from small towns across the Japanese countryside, just like Kanoya. And it is my joy and pride to share it with you.
