He creates pottery in Sera Town, Hiroshima Prefecture.
His work conveys a dynamic, inorganic impression that reflects the beauty and harshness of nature. At the same time, within its simple forms, I incorporate a subtle sense of human softness—seemingly contradictory elements that coexist in each piece he makes.
This plate is made using a distinctive method I developed, called Umeyaki — or "buried firing." After the initial bisque and glaze firings, the piece is buried in split firewood and fired once again. It's a highly unpredictable process, with a high rate of failure, but when successful, it results in a surface rich with complexity and character.
No two pieces are ever the same — each one bears unique textures and colour variations born from fire, ash, and chance.
