In Namerikawa City, Toyama Prefecture, he creates woodworking pieces based on the concept of yin and yang. Each piece is meticulously carved into forms so precise and refined that they hardly resemble traditional woodwork. The surface is finished using a technique called shōjishitsu (薪地漆), in which lacquer is applied over the wood and then mixed with tonoko (polishing powder), resulting in a textured surface with a distinct three-dimensional quality.
This uneven texture emphasizes the interplay of light and shadow, allowing the viewer to directly experience the depth and contrast inherent in the piece. In recent years, he has developed a new series called Kuro-suzu (Black Tin), in which powdered tin is mixed with the lacquer, creating a finish with a sculptural sense of weight and depth—yet the piece itself remains surprisingly light.
These works challenge conventional notions of lacquerware, pushing beyond traditional forms to express something entirely new.
